Papakura Military Camp is an important base for the New Zealand Army. It is located in Papakura North, a suburb of Auckland, in northern New Zealand. This camp is especially known as the home of the New Zealand Special Air Service, often called the NZSAS. They are a highly trained group of soldiers.
About Papakura Military Camp
Papakura Military Camp was built in 1939 by the Stevenson family. It was set up just outside the Papakura Town Centre. Today, it remains a key army base for New Zealand.
What is Inside the Camp?
The camp includes a special training area for the New Zealand Special Air Service. There used to be many homes for army families on Arimu Road and Russell Road nearby. Most of these homes have now been sold to private owners.
However, the area is still a Defence Area. This means it is a restricted zone controlled by the military. In the early 2000s, some land around the camp was used for new housing developments.
