Paper Chase (game) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Paper Chase, also known as Hare and Hounds or Chalk Chase, is a fun outdoor game for groups of friends. It's a mix of a race and a treasure hunt! You can play it in a park, a forest, or even a large open area.

What is Paper Chase?

This exciting game involves one player, called the 'hare,' who runs ahead. The other players are the 'hounds,' and they chase the hare. The hare leaves a special trail for the hounds to follow.

How to Play Paper Chase

The game begins with one person chosen to be the hare. Everyone else becomes a hound. The hare gets a head start, usually a few minutes. While running, the hare drops small pieces of paper or makes chalk marks. This trail shows the hounds which way to go.

The Hare's Important Job

The hare's main job is to lead the hounds on a tricky path. They need to drop enough paper or chalk marks so the hounds can follow. But they also want to make it challenging! Sometimes, the wind can blow the paper away, making the trail harder to find. The hare tries to reach a secret finish line without being caught.

The Hounds' Exciting Chase

After the hare's head start, the hounds begin their chase. Their goal is to follow the paper or chalk trail. They work together to find the next clue and figure out where the hare went. The hounds must try to catch the hare before the hare reaches the finish line.

Winning the Game

There are two ways to win in Paper Chase. If the hare makes it to the finish line without being caught, the hare wins! They then get to choose who will be the next hare, or they can choose to be the hare again. If a hound catches the hare before the finish line, that hound wins! The hound who caught the hare then gets to choose the next hare.
