The Paris Opera Ballet (in French, Ballet de l'Opéra de Paris) is the oldest national ballet company in the world. It started in France and many other ballet groups around the globe got their start or inspiration from it. This famous ballet company has always been a key part of the Paris Opera, which began way back in 1669. It was first called the Académie d'Opéra, or "Academy of Opera."

At first, dance wasn't a big part of the Paris Opera. But in 1673, things changed. The company was renamed the Académie Royale de Musique (Royal Academy of Music). It was then led by a famous composer named Jean-Baptiste Lully. Over its long history, the Paris Opera has had many different names. Since 1994, it has been known as the Opéra National de Paris. Today, the ballet company mostly performs at the beautiful Palais Garnier in Paris.

Early Beginnings (1669-1700s)

The Paris Opera started in 1669. At first, it focused more on opera singing than on dance. But in 1673, Jean-Baptiste Lully took charge. He loved dance and made it a much bigger part of the performances. This was a very important step for ballet.

In the 20th century, the Paris Opera Ballet continued to grow. It welcomed new ideas and modern dance styles. The company kept its strong traditions but also looked for new ways to express itself. Today, it remains one of the top ballet companies. It performs classic ballets and new works. The dancers are highly skilled and train for many years.
