The Paris and Anna Fletcher House is a special old house in Bridport, Vermont. It stands on Vermont Route 22A. This house was built around 1813. It was made even bigger in the 1820s. It's a great example of the Federal style of architecture from that time. It has a unique front porch with shallow Doric columns. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. Today, it is home to the local historical society.
What Does the Fletcher House Look Like?
The Fletcher House is located near the center of Bridport village. You can find it on the east side of Vermont 22A. It is just north of where Middle Road joins it. The house is two and a half stories tall. It is made of wood and has a pointed roof at the front. The outside is covered with wooden boards called clapboards. Its foundation is made of stone.
The front of the house has a triangle-shaped part at the top. This is called a pedimented gable. It has smooth boards in the center. A small porch, called a Doric portico, sticks out from the front. It has four columns that look like the ancient Greek Doric style. These columns support the gable above.
The front of the house has three sections for windows and doors. The main entrance is on the right side. It has tall, narrow windows next to it. These are called sidelight windows. Above the door is a beautiful fan-shaped window. This is known as a Federal style fanlight. At the back of the house, there is a two-story addition. There is also a small, single-story shed. Inside, the house has simple decorations from the Federal period.
Who Lived in the Fletcher House?
The oldest part of the house is the back section. It was built around 1813 to 1815. It was built by Paris Fletcher. He built it around the time he married Anna Miner. Paris Fletcher was a businessman. He was involved in many different business activities. He also ran a general store near the house. His store was open from 1826 to 1875.
The way the house looks, both inside and out, is special. Its design details are similar to drawings found in a book. This book was called Country Builder's Assistant. It was written by a famous architect named Asher Benjamin. By the 1900s, the house was no longer owned by the Fletcher family. In 1974, it was given to the Bridport Historical Society.
