In physics, parity is a way of looking at how things behave when you imagine them in a mirror. Think about your reflection in a mirror. Everything is flipped left-to-right. Parity symmetry means that a physics experiment would work exactly the same way if you did it, or if you watched its mirror image.

What is Parity in Physics?
Parity is a type of transformation. It's like taking a system, such as a group of particles, and flipping it through a mirror. If the system acts the same way in the mirror as it does in real life, we say it respects "parity symmetry." This is often shortened to "P symmetry."
Mirror Images and Symmetry
Imagine you're looking at a clock. In a mirror, the numbers would still be there, but the hands would move the other way. If a physical process, like a ball rolling down a ramp, looks and acts the same whether you watch it directly or in a mirror, then it has parity symmetry. Most of the basic laws of physics, like gravity and electromagnetism, follow this rule.
When Parity is Not Respected
While most physics laws respect parity symmetry, there's one important exception: the weak interaction. This is one of the four fundamental forces of nature, responsible for things like radioactive decay. In experiments involving the weak interaction, scientists found that the mirror image of an event does not always behave the same way as the original. This means parity symmetry is "violated" or "broken" in the weak interaction.
Why Parity Matters
Understanding parity helps physicists learn more about the fundamental rules that govern our universe. When a symmetry is broken, it gives clues about how particles interact and what forces are at play. The discovery that parity is violated in the weak interaction was a big surprise and led to new ideas in particle physics.
