Park Hall, Shetland facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Park Hall is a large, old house in Shetland, Scotland. It is located west of the village of Bixter, in an area called Sandsting on the Mainland island. This once grand home is now empty and falling apart. It is known as a "derelict laird's house," which means it was once owned by a Scottish landowner but has been abandoned.

History of Park Hall

Park Hall was built a long time ago, around the year 1900. A local doctor was the person who had it constructed. It has stood in this spot for over a century.

What Park Hall Looks Like

The house itself is made from concrete and has two main floors. In the garden, there is a small, unique building that looks like a temple. It has a special design, similar to buildings found in North Africa or parts of Spain. This small temple was once used for the house's old water system.

At the main entrance to the house, there were originally two tall posts, called gate-piers. These posts would have held a gate. Today, only one of these original gate-piers is still standing.

Why Park Hall is Falling Apart

Over the years, Park Hall has been left empty and uncared for. This neglect has caused a lot of damage to the house. People who have visited the house since 1997 have seen it slowly crumbling.

Many parts of the house are now broken. The walls have big cracks in them in several places. Most of the roof has fallen off or been blown away. Also, much of the original pipes and gutters that carried water away from the house are now missing.

Protecting Park Hall

Even though Park Hall is in bad shape, it is still considered an important building. Since March 26, 1997, it has been listed as a protected building. This means it is recognized for its historical importance and efforts are made to preserve it. Currently, Historic Scotland, an organization that looks after Scotland's historic places, is responsible for Park Hall.
