Pates is a community located in Robeson County, North Carolina, in the United States. It has a unique history, especially regarding its early days and the important school that began there.
The History of Pates
Pates is located in the western part of Robeson County. Before Pates, there was a village called Eureka. The community of Pates was started around 1880. A person named Russell W. Livermore settled there. The community was named after a railway worker, Ed Pates.
In 1883, Pates became an incorporated town. This means it officially became a town with its own local government. However, over time, its town government stopped being active. By 1884, Pates had a railway station. About 100 people lived there at that time.
A very important school, the Croatan Normal School, was founded in 1887. Its first buildings were built right in Pates. This school later moved to Pembroke.
