Patrice Barton is an American artist who draws pictures for children's books. She has illustrated over 20 books, including both picture books and longer chapter books.

Patrice Barton studied art at the University of Texas at Austin. She earned a special degree called a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Before she started drawing for kids' books, she had many different jobs. She worked as a house painter and designed needlepoint. She also worked at a copy shop and as a graphic designer. Her first art job was for the state of Texas, where she drew pictures for courtrooms. In her free time, she started drawing for children's book publishers. Eventually, she left her job and has been working as a full-time illustrator from her studio in Austin ever since.

Exploring Patrice Barton's Art

Patrice Barton's artwork has been featured in special art shows. One of her notable works is the book MINE!, published in 2011. This picture book, written by Shutta Crum, has almost no words. Publishers Weekly praised her art in MINE!. They said her drawings were "dizzyingly expressive" and full of energy. The New York Times also loved the book. They mentioned that the simple words "mine" and "woof" combined with Barton's "dynamic and impeccably cute illustrations" told the whole story. This shows how much emotion a book can share even with very few words.

The Invisible Boy: A Story of Kindness

Another important book illustrated by Barton is The Invisible Boy. Trudy Ludwig wrote this book. It was named one of the Best Kids Picture Books of 2013 by The Children’s Book Review. BuzzFeed also included it in their list of children's books that teach kindness. The Invisible Boy was even turned into a musical play! The stage designs for the play were based on Barton's original drawings. Kirkus Reviews described her artwork for this book as "tender illustrations rendered in glowing hues." They felt her art truly showed the main character Brian's feelings of being alone.
