Who Was Patricia Greene?
Patricia Honor Greene was born in March 1931 in Allenton, Derby, England. Her father, Edward Greene, sold pianos, and her mother, Agnes Johnson, was a housewife. Her grandfather, Edward Fitzgerald Greene, worked as a butler in Derby.
Early Life and Dreams
Patricia's family later moved to the New Zealand area of Derby. She went to Ashgate Infants School and then St Paul's Junior School. After that, she attended Parkfields Cedars Grammar School.
She started working at the Derbyshire Children's Hospital. She also worked in a sheet metal factory. Patricia once saw her father cry during a theatre performance. This moment inspired her to become an actress. She wanted to make people feel strong emotions through her acting.
In 1951, Patricia went to the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London. During a class, a teacher told her she might not be on television. This was because of how her voice sounded.
Becoming Jill Archer
In 1957, Patricia auditioned for the role of Jill Archer. This was for the BBC Radio 4 soap opera The Archers. Six experienced actresses had already auditioned before her. Patricia thought she wouldn't get the part.
However, she was chosen for the role! She continued to play Jill Archer until her death. Her first six weeks on The Archers were challenging. She was still quite new to radio acting. On her second day, she accidentally threw a glass of water over Norman Painting. He played Phil Archer in the show. This nearly caused an electrical problem. The show's creator, Godfrey Baseley, was impressed by her spirit. He decided to keep her on the series.

Besides The Archers, Patricia Greene also appeared in other productions. In 1957, she had a small part in the TV movie A Man For All Seasons. She played Anne in the British film The Kitchen in 1961. In 1964, she was Mary in the TV series It's a Woman's World.
