Patricia Selinger facts for kids
Patricia G. Selinger is a famous American computer scientist. She is known for her important work with relational database management systems. These systems help organize and store information like tables.
Her Early Studies
Patricia Selinger went to Harvard University. She earned several degrees there. She received her first degree in 1971. She then earned her master's degree in 1972. In 1975, she completed her Ph.D. All her degrees were in applied mathematics.
Her Amazing Work
Dr. Selinger played a key role in creating something called System R. This was a very important early database system. She also wrote a famous paper about how databases find information quickly. This is called "query optimization."
She is a pioneer in managing relational databases. She invented a way for databases to figure out the best way to search for information. This method looks at the "cost" of different search options. She was a main member of the original System R team. They built the first research version of a relational database.
The method she helped create is still used today. It helps most modern databases find information very fast. Dr. Selinger also started and led IBM's Database Technology Institute. This group was great at moving new ideas from research to real products. She also helped improve how databases work with different kinds of information. This includes data that is spread out or not organized. Before she retired from IBM, she was a Vice President. She was in charge of how IBM's data systems were designed and built.
Awards and Recognition
Dr. Selinger received a very high honor from IBM in 1994. She was named an IBM Fellow. This is IBM's top technical award. She also became an ACM Fellow in 2009. She is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 1999, she was chosen to be a member of the National Academy of Engineering. This was for her leadership and contributions to database technology.
Dr. Selinger has written more than 40 papers. She also won the ACM Systems Software Award for her work on System R. In 2002, she received the SIGMOD Innovations Award. This is the highest award from ACM in the area of data management.
Later Career
From 2014 to 2016, Dr. Selinger was the Chief Technology Officer at Paradata. This company worked on making data clear and easy to use. They helped businesses understand their supply chains better. Paradata's technology turned real-time information into useful insights.
From 2017 to 2018, Dr. Selinger worked as a Principal Architect at Salesforce.com. She is now retired.
