Early Life and School
Patrick Elias grew up in Cardiff, Wales. He went to Exeter University and earned a top-notch law degree in 1969. While at university, he was active in sports, playing for both the rugby and cricket teams. In 1973, he became a lawyer after training at a place called Inner Temple. His brother, Gerard Elias, is also a well-known lawyer.
His Career as a Judge
Sir Patrick Elias had a long and important career in law. In 1995, he became a Bencher, which is a senior member of a legal society. Before that, he was a fellow at Pembroke College, Cambridge. He also worked as a part-time judge from 1997 to 1999.
In January 1999, he became a Deputy High Court Judge. Just a few months later, in May 1999, he was made a full-time Judge of the High Court. This also meant he received a special honor: he was made a Knight Bachelor in July 1999, which is why he is called "Sir." From 2006 to 2009, he was the head of the Employment Appeal Tribunal, a court that deals with problems at work. On March 3, 2009, he was also appointed to Her Majesty's Privy Council.
