Patrick Fitzmaurice: An Irish Nobleman
Patrick Fitzmaurice was sent to England when he was young. This was a way to show that his father was loyal to Queen Elizabeth I. When Patrick turned twenty, Queen Elizabeth allowed him to return to Ireland.
Early Challenges and Rebellion
In 1580, Patrick joined a rebellion led by the Earl of Desmond. Soon after, he and his brother Edmund were captured. They were held prisoner in Limerick Castle.
Escape and Later Imprisonment
In August 1581, Patrick managed to escape from Limerick Castle. People thought his jailer, John Sheriff, might have helped him get away. In September 1582, there were reports that he had gone to Spain. However, in January 1583, he was injured in a place called Dingle. Later, in April 1587, he was captured again and sent to Dublin Castle.
Efforts for Freedom and Final Years
In 1588, a man named Sir William Herbert tried to help Patrick get out of prison. Sir William believed Patrick was not a troublemaker. But other officials, like St. Leger and Fitzwilliam, disagreed. Even Patrick's wife tried hard to get him released. Despite these efforts, he stayed in prison until 1591 or 1592.
During a big rebellion in Ireland near the end of Queen Elizabeth's rule, Patrick joined the rebels. He might have been forced to join rather than choosing to. He lost his home, the castle of Lixnaw, during this time. This loss and the difficult situation affected him greatly. He passed away shortly after, in August 1600.
Patrick Fitzmaurice was buried with his uncle, Donald, Earl of Clancar. They were laid to rest in the Grey Friary of Irrelaugh in Desmond. Patrick was married to Joan or Jane, who was the daughter of David, Viscount Fermoy. They had three sons: Thomas, who became the 18th Baron Kerry, Gerald, and Maurice. They also had two daughters, Joan and Eleanor.
