Sir Patrick de Graham: A Scottish Knight

Sir Patrick de Graham was the son of David Graham of Dundaff. He grew up in a time when Scotland was often involved in conflicts with England. His family was well-known, and he became a respected figure in Scottish society.

Early Life and Important Tasks

In 1281, Patrick de Graham was chosen for a very important job. He helped arrange the marriage between Prince Alexander of Scotland and Margaret of Flanders. This was a big deal because royal marriages often helped create peace or strong alliances between countries.

Later, in 1284, he attended the Scottish Parliament. This was a meeting where important decisions for the country were made. At this meeting, he agreed that Margaret, the Maid of Norway, should be the next queen of Scotland. She was the granddaughter of the king and the closest heir.

Serving Scotland and the King

By 1289, Patrick de Graham was the Sheriff of Stirling. A sheriff was a powerful official who helped keep law and order in a region. He also had a role in the "Great Cause" of 1292. This was a time when many people were trying to become the King of Scotland after the royal family line ended. Patrick was one of the people who helped decide who should be king. He supported John Balliol, who eventually became king.

In 1292, Patrick de Graham swore loyalty to King Edward I of England. This was a common practice at the time, as English kings often tried to control Scotland. He even served King Edward I in France in 1294, showing his military skills.

His Final Battle

Sir Patrick de Graham's life ended in 1296. He died fighting bravely at the Battle of Dunbar. This battle was a major conflict between Scotland and England, marking a difficult period in Scottish history.
