The Paul Johnson Three-Decker is a historic triple decker house located in Worcester, Massachusetts. A "three-decker" is a type of house with three separate apartments, one on each floor. These homes were very common in New England cities. Built around 1908, this house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. It was recognized as an important local example of a Queen Anne style triple-decker. Over the years, some of its original decorative features have been changed.

Exploring the Paul Johnson Three-Decker

This section will tell you more about what the Paul Johnson Three-Decker looks like and its interesting past.

Where is the House Located?

The Paul Johnson Three-Decker stands in eastern Worcester. You can find it on the west side of Stanton Street. It's just north of Belmont Street, which is a big road that goes through the city.

What Does the House Look Like?

This house is a three-story building made of wood. It has a sloped roof. The outside of the house is covered with modern siding. The front of the house has two main parts. On the left, there is a bay window that sticks out. On the right, there are porches stacked on top of each other for each floor.

When the house was first built, these porches had fancy turned posts and railings. In the 1920s, the railings were replaced with siding. The original posts were likely changed to simple square ones more recently. The house also used to have decorative wooden shingles between the floors. The rest of the house was covered in wooden clapboards.

Who Lived in This Historic Home?

The Paul Johnson Three-Decker was built around 1908. At that time, the area around Belmont Street was growing fast. Many new homes were being built for people who worked in the city's large steel and wire factories.

Most of the workers who moved into this neighborhood came from Scandinavia. They were immigrants from countries like Sweden and Finland. Paul Johnson, who was the first owner of this building, worked as a pattern maker. Early people who rented apartments here included machinists, an electrician, and a carpenter. This shows how important these three-decker homes were for working families in Worcester.
