Paul Robert: The Dictionary Maker

Paul Robert was born in Algeria, which was part of France at the time. He grew up to become a lexicographer. A lexicographer is a person who writes and edits dictionaries. It is a very detailed job that needs a lot of knowledge about words.

Creating His Famous Dictionaries

Paul Robert spent many years working on his big dictionary. Its full name was Dictionnaire alphabétique et analogique de la langue française. This dictionary was special because it not only defined words but also showed how they related to other words. It was first published in 1953.

Later, in 1967, he released a shorter version. This was called the Petit Robert, which means "Little Robert". The Petit Robert became very popular. It is still one of the most used French dictionaries today.

Starting His Own Company
