Paula Lazos (born June 30, 1940 – died January 27, 2010) was a talented Mexican painter. Her amazing artwork was shown in North and South America. She was also a proud member of the important Salón de la Plástica Mexicana.

Life Story

Paula Lazos was born in Cuernavaca, Mexico. She lived and worked there her whole life. In 1954, she finished a program to become an art teacher. This was at the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Morelos. From 1958 to 1959, she also took modern dance classes. For a while, she wasn't sure if she wanted to be a painter or a dancer.

In 1963, she met the famous painter Dr Atl. They met at the Instituto Regional de Bellas Artes. They had an idea to create a special science center in Tepoztlán. Dr. Atl supported her, and she became the secretary of the project. But Dr. Atl became sick and passed away in 1964. Because of this, the project did not continue.

In 1965, she married another painter, Rafael Mazón. They got married at the Cuernavaca Cathedral. They lived in Cuernavaca and had one son. His name was Tláloc Rafael.

In 1985, Paula Lazos helped people affected by the 1985 Mexico City earthquake. She donated one of her paintings to raise money for them.

In the early 1990s, she and her family met writer Andrés Henestrosa. This meeting happened in Oaxaca, Mexico. Her art was shown at the Martina Henestrosa Library there. This library was built by the writer to honor his mother.

Paula Lazos passed away in Cuernavaca in 2010.

Her Art Career

In 1957, Paula Lazos helped start the Instituto Regional de Bellas Artes of Cuernavaca (IRBAC). This art institute supported her work throughout her career. Starting in 1965, she began teaching. She taught painting and origami to children at the institute. She taught kindergarten for many years too. From 1975, she also taught at a special teacher training center.

Paula Lazos had her first solo art show in 1960. It was at the Trini Gallery in Cuernavaca. Since then, her artwork has been shown in many places. These include Mexico, the United States, and South America. Many of her solo shows were in Mexico. Some places were Galería 5, Calmecac Gallery, and the Palacio de Cortés. In 1975, a national exhibition of her work was held. It was part of the International Year of the Woman.

In 1968, the Museum of the University of Memphis bought two of her paintings. This helped her art become known in the United States.

Paula Lazos received her first award early in her career. It was an honorable mention at an art show at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Later, she received the Quetzalcoatl Prize. She also became a member of the Salón de la Plástica Mexicana. She was an active member there until she passed away in 2010.
