Early Life and Family

Paulo Dias de Novais came from a well-known family in Portugal. His grandfather, Bartolomeu Dias, was the first European to sail around the southern tip of Africa. This journey opened up new sea routes for Portugal. Paulo grew up in a time when Portugal was exploring many new lands. He was part of the Royal Household, which meant he served the King directly. This gave him a good position in society.

Journey to Angola

Paulo Dias de Novais arrived in the area we now call Angola on February 11, 1575. He led a group of Portuguese settlers and soldiers. Their goal was to establish a permanent Portuguese presence in the region. They were also very interested in finding valuable resources. One of the main reasons for his journey was the hope of finding silver mines. People believed there were rich silver mines in a place called Cambambe.

Founding of Luanda

When Paulo Dias de Novais arrived, he chose a good spot for a new settlement. He founded the city of São Paulo de Luanda. This city was built near an island called Luanda Island. Today, São Paulo de Luanda is known simply as Luanda. It is the capital city of Angola. The founding of Luanda was a very important moment. It marked the beginning of Portuguese rule in Angola.
