Pave Maijanen's Musical Journey
Pave Maijanen was born in Lappeenranta, Finland. He became interested in music very early, at just 6 years old. That's when he started playing the harmonica! In the 1960s, he was already playing in several bands. One of the most well-known was Mielikummitus, which played for singer Kristian.
Pave's music career continued as the bass player for the famous band Pepe & Paradise. He also became the lead singer for The Royals. Pave also sang on albums for the amazing guitar player Albert Järvinen. His first solo song, called "Fever", came out in 1975.
Pave's Solo Success
In the early 1980s, Pave started his own band called Pave's Mistakes. They released two albums. On their second album, Pidä huolta, Pave wrote, composed, and sang his first songs in Finnish. The main song from that album became a huge hit in 1981.
His first album released only under his own name was Tanssivat kengät in 1983. This album included the popular disco funk song "Aiaiai", which came out a year earlier. Throughout the 1980s, Pave created a lot of Finnish rock and pop music on his solo albums. He wrote most of his own songs. He sometimes used the secret name Maija Paavonen. The famous singer Hector also wrote lyrics for Pave's songs.
Pave Maijanen's solo career was most popular in the mid-1980s. His albums Maijanen (1984) and Palava sydän (1985) sold so many copies that they earned "diamond record" awards. This means they sold a huge number of copies! The album Maailman tuulet (1987) also earned a "gold record" award for its sales. Some of Pave's other big hits include Lähtisitkö, Jano, Joki ja meri, Elämän nälkä, and Ikävä.
Producing for Other Bands
Pave Maijanen was also a very well-known music producer in the 1980s. He produced the last albums for Hurriganes. He also produced the famous records for the band Dingo. Some people even called Pave "the sixth Dingo." This is because he was so involved with Dingo's music in the 1980s. The band never went into the recording studio without him!
Later Career and Challenges
In the 1990s, Pave's own record sales were not as high as before. He also had a tough time at the Eurovision Song Contest 1992. His song "Yamma Yamma" finished in last place. When his solo career was quieter, Pave played keyboards for Dingo's comeback concerts from 1993 to 1994. He played all the keyboard parts on Dingo's album Via Finlandia.
Towards the end of the 1990s, Pave became famous again. He joined a group called "Mestarit Areenalla" with other singers like Kirka, Hector, and Pepe Willberg. They sold out huge ice hockey arenas across Finland! Pave also held his own concert at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium. He was the first Finnish artist ever to do this!
Pave Maijanen worked as a musician and producer throughout his entire life. This means he was always involved in music. He also produced music for television shows. For example, he sang the Finnish version of the theme song for the cartoon DuckTales.
In September 2020, Pave shared some sad news. He had been diagnosed with a serious illness called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 2018. This disease made it impossible for him to play music or sing anymore. Pave passed away from his illness in January 2021, at the age of 70.
