The Story of Pawnee: A Look Back in Time

Pawnee wasn't always called Pawnee! It was first known as Esselburn's Corners. This name came from a man named Louis Esselburn. In 1872, he opened a general store there. A general store was a very important place back then, selling all sorts of goods that people needed every day.

Later, in 1879, a post office was set up in the community. It was given the name Pawnee. This post office helped people send and receive letters and packages. It operated for several years, closing down in 1887. Even though the post office is gone, the name Pawnee stuck around for this quiet Ohio community.
