Explore Wildwood: The Setting of Paws & Tales
Paws & Tales takes place in a make-believe town called Wildwood. It sits at the bottom of Wild Mountain. About two miles east, you'll find the "Bay of Tranquility." All the characters are animals who act like people. Their technology is similar to the early 1900s. The main characters are a group of kids known as "The Club." They are C.J., Staci, Ned, Gooz, and Marsha. Their special meeting place is called "The Fortress."
Meet the Main Characters of The Club
Paw Paw Chuck: The Wise Grizzly Bear
Paw Paw Chuck is a grizzly bear and the handyman of Wildwood. He works at Paw Paw's Fix-it-Shop. His most important job is to share wisdom and guidance with everyone in town. He has been married to Nana Cindy for almost 30 years. They don't have their own grandchildren. So, they act as grandparents to many kids in Wildwood. Paw Paw Chuck is very strong and brave. He always stands up for what is right.
C.J. Brown: The Leader Bear Cub
Chancellor James "C.J." Brown is a grizzly bear cub. He is often the main character in the stories. C.J. loves to have fun and be in charge. But sometimes, his desire to lead causes problems. He can also be a bit selfish and keeps secrets. He is working on changing these habits. C.J. has different colored eyes, one blue eye on his left. This makes it hard for him to see clearly. He is sensitive but uses humor to deal with his vision.
Staci Clemmer: The Brave Brown Bear
Staci Clemmer is a brown bear cub. She is very dramatic and brave, not afraid of anything. Staci has a great sense of humor. But she finds it hard to laugh at herself. She is sometimes immature, selfish, and quick-tempered. Staci also tries to take charge, which can cause trouble. However, she is excellent at solving problems. She is learning to control her less helpful traits. Staci often welcomes new people to Wildwood. She brings them homemade chocolate-chip cookies.
Ned Cleaver: The Smart Beaver
Ned Cleaver is a beaver and C.J.'s best friend. He is the smartest kid in The Club. Sometimes, being so smart can cause problems for him. Ned and C.J. are the only boys in The Club. They often finish each other's sentences. Ned can also be selfish and thoughtless at times. He is working on improving his behavior.
Pinkie "Gooz" Gongoozler: The Curious Weasel
Pinkie Gongoozler is a weasel, nicknamed "Gooz." She is always curious and loves anything unusual. This means she can get distracted easily. Her funny observations keep The Club members on their toes. Gooz is also a very talented artist. Beneath her silly side, she is very wise. She comes from a big family that doesn't have much money. But this doesn't stop her from seeing the good in life. Her siblings include Willie, Ricky, Francie, and others. Gooz can sometimes be thoughtless or keep secrets. She is learning to be more open and truthful.
Marsha Moffet: The Kind Moose Calf
Marsha Moffet is a young moose calf. She is going through a growth spurt, so she's a bit clumsy. But she is the most grown-up of the kids. Marsha is very kind and caring. She has a lot of compassion for others. She is also a champion speller. Marsha is working on her posture and being even kinder.
Other Friendly Faces in Wildwood

Schoolmates and Neighbors

Hugh doesn't understand why The Club is so devoted to their faith. He once thought about joining The Club but decided not to. It is hinted that Hugh faces challenges at home. These might contribute to his bullying.
- Tiffany Rockler - Another schoolmate. Tiffany is the daughter of Mr. Rockler, the richest man in town. Tiffany is often vain and self-centered. She tries to use her family's money and status to get what she wants. She has a lot of growing up to do.
