Dohwa-cha (Hangul: 도화차; Hanja: 桃花茶), also known as peach blossom tea, is a special traditional Korean tea. It is made from the beautiful dried flowers of the peach tree. This lovely tea is enjoyed for its delicate taste and pretty look.
What is Peach Blossom Tea?
Peach blossom tea, or Dohwa-cha, is a type of herbal tea. It comes from the country of Korea, where people have been making and drinking it for a long time. The tea gets its name from the peach blossoms it is made from. These are the same flowers that grow on peach trees before the fruit appears.
How is Peach Blossom Tea Made?
Making Dohwa-cha starts in the springtime. This is when peach trees are covered in their lovely pink and white flowers.
- Harvesting: The flowers are carefully picked by hand.
- Drying: After picking, the flowers are dried. This is usually done in a shady spot. Drying helps to preserve the flowers for later use.
- Preparing: Before drying, tiny parts inside the flower called stamens are removed. Once dried, the flowers are stored in paper bags.
When you want to make the tea, you can use about 15 to 20 grams of these dried peach blossoms. You boil them in about 500 milliliters of water. Many times, Dohwa-cha comes already prepared for you to use.
How to Enjoy Your Tea
To make a cup of peach blossom tea, you usually steep the dried flowers or tea bags in hot water.
- Steeping: It is best to let the tea steep for about 5 to 10 minutes. This means letting the flowers sit in the hot water.
- Strength: The longer you steep the tea, the stronger its flavor will be. You can adjust the time to find out how you like it best!
