Pebibyte facts for kids
A pebibyte (pronounced "PEH-bee-bite" and often shortened to PiB) is a super big unit used to measure computer memory or data. Think of it like a giant storage box for digital information!
One pebibyte is equal to 250 bytes. That's a massive number: 1,125,899,906,842,624 bytes! To make it easier to understand, it's also 1,024 tebibytes.
It's important not to confuse a pebibyte with a petabyte. While they sound similar, a petabyte is based on powers of 10 (1015 bytes), and a pebibyte is based on powers of 2 (binary). Computers use binary, so pebibytes are often used for very precise measurements of computer storage.
Just like 1,024 bytes make a kilobyte, and 1,024 kilobytes make a megabyte, 1,024 pebibytes make an exbibyte.
Understanding Data Sizes
To help you imagine how much data these units hold, here are some examples:
Unit | What it's like |
---|---|
bit | A single "on" (1) or "off" (0) switch in a computer. |
byte | Enough space for one letter, like 'A' or 'b'. |
kilobyte | The text of a short story or a small picture. |
megabyte | A full song or a few chapters of a book. |
gigabyte | About half an hour of video or a whole movie. |
terabyte | Enough space for hundreds of movies or thousands of photos. |
petabyte | Imagine 2,000 years of music in MP3 format! |
exabyte | All the internet traffic in the world for a whole month, back in 2004. |
zettabyte | All the internet traffic in the world for a whole year, as of 2016! |
