Peck & Peck was founded in 1888 by two brothers, Edgar Wallace Peck and George H. Peck. They started their business in New York as a store selling hosiery, which means socks and stockings. One of their first locations was near Madison Square.
When Edgar Peck passed away, a magazine reported that the brothers once had to pay rent every day. This was because their landlord didn't trust them much at first. But over time, their business grew a lot.
Growing Across the Country
From just one store, Peck & Peck expanded greatly. It grew to have 19 stores and eventually had 78 stores all across the United States. This showed how popular and successful their classic clothing style was.
Challenges and Changes
In 1974, Peck & Peck faced financial difficulties. They had to file for something called Chapter 11 bankruptcy. This is a legal process that helps companies reorganize their business when they are having money problems.
In 1976, a company called Salkin & Linoff bought Peck & Peck. However, due to some business challenges, the chain of stores eventually began to close down. Many store locations were sold off in parts.
What Happened Next?
In the mid to late 1980s, some of Peck & Peck's store locations were sold to another company. Salkin & Linoff closed their last five stores in January 1991. The remaining items and assets were then sold in a bankruptcy sale.
After Peck & Peck closed, other clothing stores became more popular. Examples include Ann Taylor and Talbots. These stores continued to offer classic styles to shoppers. Since 2008, the Peck & Peck name is owned by Stein Mart. They use the name for their own line of women's clothing.
