Pedro Chacón (born in 1526 in Toledo and died in 1581 in Rome) was a smart Spanish scholar. He was an expert in both mathematics and theology (the study of religion). He also studied ancient history and cultures.

Life and Studies

Pedro Chacón worked as a professor of Greek at the University of Salamanca in Spain. He loved history and used old documents from the library to write a book about the university's past in 1569. While at Salamanca, he was part of a famous group of thinkers called the School of Salamanca. This group included other important professors like Francisco de Salinas and Fray Luis de León.

Around 1572, Pedro Chacón moved to Rome. He was asked to come by Pope Gregory XIII. The Pope needed his help with a big project: changing the Julian Calendar. The old calendar was not quite right, and the Pope wanted to create a better one. In 1577, Pedro wrote a book called Compendium Novae Rationis Restituendi Kalendarium. This book explained the ideas for the new calendar, which would later become the Gregorian calendar we use today. While in Rome, he also spent a lot of time studying old books and writings from ancient times.

Main Works

Pedro Chacón wrote several important books and papers. Here are some of his notable works:

  • De Triclinio sive de Modo convivandi apud prisco Romanos… – This was his most famous book. It explored how ancient Romans ate their meals. He wrote about their food, drinks, wine, guests, table manners, and even the music they listened to while eating.
  • Historia de la Universidad de Salamanca hecha por el Maestro Pedro Chacón – This book, published in 1990, is a detailed history of the University of Salamanca, based on his earlier research.
