Pedro Gómez de la Serna (born February 21, 1806 – died December 12, 1871) was an important Spanish lawyer and politician. He helped a lot to modernize Spanish laws in the 1800s.

Early Life and Education

Pedro Gómez de la Serna studied civil law and church law at the University of Alcalá. He later became a teacher at the same university. After his studies, he started working in the government's legal system.

A Career in Politics and Government

In 1836, Pedro Gómez de la Serna became the governor of Guadalajara. He was a supporter of the Progressive Party.

Important Government Roles

  • In 1843, he became the Minister of the Interior. This was during the time when Baldomero Espartero was leading the country.
  • Gómez de la Serna went with Espartero to London when Espartero had to leave Spain.
  • He returned to Spain in 1846.
  • In 1854, he briefly served as the Minister of Justice. This was under Salustiano Olózaga.
  • From 1854 to 1856, he was the main lawyer for the government, known as the Attorney General of Spain.
  • In 1869, he became the president of the highest court in Spain.
