The Pelatiah Leete House is a very old and special home in Guilford, Connecticut. It was built way back in 1710 by Pelatiah Leete. This house is important because it's the oldest one still standing that belonged to the famous Leete family.
The Leete family were among the first people to settle the New Haven Colony. Because of its history, the Pelatiah Leete House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. This means it's recognized as a really important historical building.

Exploring the Pelatiah Leete House
The Pelatiah Leete House is located in a quiet, country-like area in Guilford. You can find it on the north side of Leete's Island Road. It sits a bit far back from the road, close to the railroad tracks.
What Does It Look Like?
This house is a two-and-a-half story building made of wood. It has a pointed roof and a big chimney in the middle. The outside is covered with wooden boards called clapboards.
The front of the house has three sections with windows. The main door is in the center. It has a fancy frame with columns and a small triangular roof above it. This style is called Greek Revival.
The Unique Saltbox Shape
If you look at the back of the house, you'll see it has a long, sloping roof. This part is called a leanto section. This special shape gives the house a classic New England colonial look, known as a saltbox house. Imagine a saltbox from olden times, and you'll see why it got its name!
Inside the house, many of the original features are still there. This includes old fireplaces and other parts of the house's first design.

The Pelatiah Leete House was built in 1710. Its builder, Pelatiah Leete, was the grandson of a very important person. His grandfather was William Leete, who helped start the New Haven Colony. William Leete even became a governor of the colony.
The house was built on land that William Leete first settled. This makes the Pelatiah Leete House a key part of the Leete family's long history in the area. It is the oldest house still standing that belonged to this founding family.
