The Pentecost River is an important river in Western Australia. It flows through the amazing Kimberley region. This area is in the northern part of the state. The river is known for its beautiful views and wild landscapes. It is a key part of the local environment.

About the Pentecost River

The Pentecost River starts in the Durack Range mountains. It then flows northwards. The river travels about 118 kilometers (73 miles). Its basin, or the area of land that drains into it, covers about 29,413 square kilometers (11,357 square miles).

The River's Journey

As the river flows, it passes through a famous place called El Questro Station. Here, it joins another river, the Chamberlain River. The Pentecost River then keeps flowing north. It crosses the well-known Gibb River Road. After that, it goes along the eastern edge of Drysdale River National Park. Finally, the river empties into the west arm of the Cambridge Gulf.

Rivers Joining the Pentecost

Many smaller rivers and creeks flow into the Pentecost River. These are called tributaries. Some of the main ones include the Chamberlain River, Salmond River, Gap Creek, and Five Mile Creek. Interestingly, both the Chamberlain and Salmond rivers are longer than the Pentecost River itself!

How the River Got Its Name

The Pentecost River was named after a man named John Pentecost. He was a surveyor and geologist. In 1882, John Pentecost explored this river. He was part of an expedition led by Michael Durack. That's how the river got its name, honoring his work in the area.

Traditional Owners of the Land

The land around the Pentecost River has been home to Indigenous peoples for a very long time. The traditional owners of this area are the Arnga peoples. They have a deep connection to the land and the river.
