The Pequoig Hotel is a very old building in Athol, Massachusetts. It used to be a hotel. It was built in 1894 by an important local builder. This building is the biggest and most famous one in downtown Athol.
It was a hotel until the 1950s. Later, in 1982, it became a home for older people. In 1978, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a special building worth protecting.
About the Pequoig Hotel
The old Pequoig Hotel is on Main Street in downtown Athol. It is a tall building with four stories. It is made from red bricks. It also has fancy parts made of granite and terra cotta.
The front of the building, facing Main Street, has many windows. The windows on the top floor are rounded at the top. The roof has a large edge that sticks out. The middle part of the building has three windows together. It also has a special window section that sticks out.
The side of the building on Exchange Street looks similar. The shops on the ground floor have changed over time. This happened as different businesses moved in and out.
History of the Building
Lucien Lord, a big real estate developer, built the hotel in 1894. He was important in building many things in the area. The Pequoig Hotel is the best-kept old business building in Athol.
When it was built, it was the largest building in town that wasn't a factory. It worked as a hotel until the 1950s. The shops on the ground floor stayed open into the 1970s. After being empty for a while, it was changed into a place for older people to live.
