Per Almar Aas: A Life in Politics

Per Almar Aas dedicated much of his life to public service. He worked at both the national and local levels of government in Norway. His career shows how someone can start in one field and move into politics to help their community.

Serving in the Norwegian Parliament

Per Almar Aas was elected to the Norwegian Parliament from the area of Troms in 1973. The Storting is Norway's main law-making body, similar to a parliament or congress in other countries. He was chosen by the people to represent them three more times after his first election.

Before becoming a full member, he also served as a "deputy representative" from 1969 to 1973. A deputy representative steps in if a regular member cannot attend or needs to be replaced temporarily. This experience helped him learn how the Parliament worked.

Local Government and Party Involvement

Aas also worked in local government. From 1967 to 1971, he was a member of the Harstad municipal council. A municipal council helps run a city or town, making decisions about local services and rules.

Later, from 1971 to 1975, he served on the Troms county council. A county council manages a larger region, overseeing things like schools and roads for several towns.

He was also very active in his political party. He led the Christian Democratic Party's chapter in Troms county from 1970 to 1973. He also served on the national board of the party for many years, from 1970 to 1973 and again from 1985 to 1999. The national board helps guide the party's overall direction and policies.

Early Life and Career

Before entering politics, Per Almar Aas had a different kind of career. He started as a manual laborer, doing physical work in various places. From 1945 to 1950, he worked in Ballangen. He then worked in Snåsa in 1951, Ørsta from 1951 to 1952, and Volda from 1952 to 1953.

In 1969, he moved to Harstad. There, he began a new profession as a school teacher. This background in both manual labor and teaching gave him a wide range of experiences before he became a politician.
