The Last Stand at Bosworth

The Battle of Bosworth Field happened in 1485. It was one of the last big battles in the Wars of the Roses. This was a long fight between two powerful families, the Plantagenets and the Tudors, for control of England. The battle ended the Plantagenet rule and started the Tudor dynasty.

Sir Percival Thirlwall fought right beside King Richard III. Richard made a final, desperate charge against Henry Tudor, who would become King Henry VII. This charge is sometimes called the "swan song of medieval chivalry." It means it was one of the last times knights fought in a very traditional, heroic way.

A Legend of Loyalty

During this fierce fight, Sir Percival Thirlwall was killed. This happened after another knight, Sir William Stanley, and his soldiers joined the battle against King Richard.

A famous story says that even when King Richard's group was losing, Sir Percival kept the royal flag held high. He fought bravely, even after being badly wounded. The legend says he held the standard until his very last breath. This story shows his incredible loyalty to his king.

His Family History

Sir Percival Thirlwall belonged to the Thirlwall family. It is very likely he lived at Thirlwall Castle. His family had lived in this castle for many years, from around 1330 until 1748.
