Pere de Coma facts for kids
Pere de Coma was an important architect from the Middle Ages. He lived in the 1200s. He brought the Romanesque style of building to the city of Lleida in Catalonia, a region in Spain.
Early Life and Move to Lleida
We don't know much about where Pere de Coma came from. Some historians think he might have been from a place called Lombardy in Italy. Others suggest he came from northern parts of Catalonia, like Ribagorça or Solsonès.
We do know that Pere de Coma settled in Lleida by the year 1180. He bought land in the Sant Joan area of the city.
Building the Seu Vella
In 1193, Pere de Coma asked Gombau de Camporrells, who was the Bishop of Lleida, if he could work on the Seu Vella. This was a very important church. In 1203, he was hired to lead the building of this great cathedral. He worked on it for almost 20 years.
The Seu Vella was built on the site of an older mosque. This mosque was used when Lleida was part of Al-Andalus. There was also a smaller Christian church there before. Some experts wonder if Pere de Coma was meant to make the old church bigger or design a completely new one.
His Style and Legacy
Pere de Coma's main work on the Seu Vella was the strong structure of the building. Other artists, part of the "Lleida school" of Romanesque architecture, helped with the decorations. Many of these artists were of Moorish background.
Pere de Coma's main design for the Seu Vella was kept for a long time. Even in the next century, when Gothic styles became popular, his original structure remained.
Pere de Coma died in Lleida. After him, a relative named Berenguer de Coma took over the building work.
