The Perro Majorero (in English, the Majorero dog) is a special dog breed from the Canary Islands in Spain. For a long time, these dogs have been used as cattle dogs. They also work as guard dogs, helping to protect farms and homes.
History of the Perro Majorero
The word Majorero comes from the Guanche language. The Guanche people were the first people to live on the Canary Islands. Today, this word is still used to describe people from the island of Fuerteventura.
In 1979, a special meeting was held in Tuineje, Fuerteventura. Farmers, dog experts, and judges gathered to discuss the Perro Majorero. This meeting was the start of a journey to get the breed officially recognized. The Real Sociedad Canina de España, which is a big dog club in Spain, officially recognized the Perro Majorero on April 14, 1994.
Later, the number of Perro Majorero dogs started to drop. This happened for a few reasons. Fewer people were working in traditional farming. Also, new dog breeds were brought to Fuerteventura. There was no clear plan to breed and choose the best Perro Majorero dogs. This made the breed's quality decline.
To help save the breed, the "Association for the Conservation of the Perro Majorero" (ACPM) was created. Dog breeders, owners, and fans started this group. Their main goal is to protect and help the Perro Majorero survive. They are working to make people on Fuerteventura love this breed again.
The ACPM has a special plan to select and improve Perro Majorero dogs. One of their projects is selling puppies to their members and to farmers. This helps to bring more good quality dogs back to the island. It also helps to make sure the dogs have known family trees.
