Peter John Fane de Salis (born February 26, 1799 – died December 24, 1870) was a Count of the Holy Roman Empire. He was a professional soldier and owned a lot of land in Middlesex, England, and in County Limerick and County Armagh in Ireland. He was also a leader in the Order of Saint John in England and Ireland. He held special titles like Knight of the Golden Spur and Papal Count Palatine.

Peter John was born in Marylebone, Westminster, England, and passed away in Acton at the age of 71. He was the oldest son of Jerome, 4th Count de Salis, and his first wife, Sophia Drake. William Fane de Salis was his younger half-brother.

  • John Francis William de Salis: He became the 6th Count de Salis-Soglio. He was a diplomat and a numismatist, which means he was an expert in collecting coins and currency.
  • Peter (1827–1919): He served in the Austrian army. Later, he became the curator of an art museum in Neuchâtel. His only child who lived to adulthood was Elisabeth Sophie.
  • George Alois (1829–1866): He was a captain in the 3rd Lancer Regiment. George was seriously wounded in the Battle of Custoza in 1866 and later died from his injuries. He was buried in Verona.
  • Anna Sophia Elisabeth (1832–1916): She married her cousin, Johann Gaudenz Dietegan.

Peter received his education in London, Edinburgh, and Lausanne. He had a long military career. He was a leader in the Swiss Guards, serving the French kings Louis XVIII and Charles X. He also served the King of Naples and became a Colonel in the Prussian army. In England and Ireland, he was a major in local military groups.

He received many honors and titles throughout his life:

  • In 1817, he received the Fleur de Lys in Paris.
  • In 1820, he became a Knight Commander of the Order of the Phoenix of Hohenlohe.
  • He was also a Knight of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.
  • From 1823 to 1835, he served as Landammann (a type of local leader) in Stalla/Bivio.
  • He became a Knight of the Legion of Honour of France.
  • In 1831, he was made a Knight of the Royal Order of the Red Eagle (Prussian).
  • In 1832, he received a medal from the King of Prussia for helping to stop an uprising in Neuchâtel.

Later Life and Public Service

After his father passed away in 1836, Peter took on more responsibilities.

  • In September 1837, he became the Commandant of The Volunteer Infantry in Uxbridge.
  • In 1844, he was admitted as a Knight of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem.
  • By 1868, he was a top leader in the English and Irish branches of the Sovereign Order of Malta.

Peter was also involved in local government.

  • From 1832, he was a Deputy Lieutenant for County Armagh. This was a role to help the Lord Lieutenant of the county.
  • In 1849, he was appointed a Justice of the Peace (JP), which meant he could help keep law and order. He was also the High Sheriff of Limerick that year.
  • In 1853, he was named High Sheriff of Armagh.
  • He was also a Justice of the Peace for Middlesex and Westminster.

  • The 1861 census showed him living in Acton, west London. He was described as a magistrate and landowner.
  • By 1865, he was listed as living at Tandragee and Turnham Green, Middlesex.
  • In 1868, he was listed at Ballylisk House near Tandragee, St. John's Villa in Acton, and Hillingdon Place in Uxbridge.

Peter John Fane de Salis was buried in Kensal Green Cemetery.
