History of the House
The Appeldorn Family
In the 1850s, a shoemaker named Ryer Appeldorn moved to Kalamazoo from Holland. He started a very successful business making shoes and tanning leather. His sons continued the family business after him.
One of Ryer's sons, Peter B. Appeldorn, bought the land for this house in 1894. He had the house built for his family in 1895. The Appeldorns lived in this house for many years, right up until World War II.
What Does the House Look Like?
The Peter B. Appeldorn House is a two-story building. It's built in a style called Queen Anne. This style was popular for homes in the late 1800s.
The house has an "L" shape. In the corner of the "L" is a small open porch. This porch has posts and a railing that look like the Colonial Revival style.
One side of the front of the house has a part that sticks out. It has a special kind of roof called a jerkinhead gable. This part balances out the look of the small porch and its steep roof. The top part of the front gable sticks out over the first floor. The first floor has cool angled corners. The upper floor is covered with special shingles that look like fish scales! The side of the house looks very similar, with another big gable and an open porch.
