The Chamberlen Family's Secret
The Chamberlen family were Huguenots, who were French Protestants. They had to leave France and came to England in 1569. Guillaume Chamberlen, Peter's father, was also a surgeon.
The Amazing Forceps Invention
The obstetrical forceps were a very important invention. Before them, childbirth could be very dangerous for both mothers and babies. These special tools helped doctors safely deliver babies when there were difficulties. The Chamberlens kept the design of these forceps a secret for four generations. This meant only family members knew how to use them and how they were made.
Peter Chamberlen the Younger
Peter Chamberlen the Younger lived from 1572 to 1626. He followed in his father's footsteps as a surgeon and obstetrician. He married Sara Delaune, whose father was also a Huguenot doctor. Peter the Younger and Sara had eight children. One of their sons, also named Peter Chamberlen (born in 1601), became a famous physician too.
How They Kept It a Secret
It is believed that Peter the Elder, Peter the Younger's brother, was the main inventor of the forceps. The brothers went to great lengths to keep their invention hidden. When they went to help a woman in labor, they would bring a huge, fancy box into the house. The patient would be blindfolded so she couldn't see anything. Everyone else had to leave the room. Then, the doctor would work. People outside would hear strange noises, like screams and bells. These sounds were part of the act to make the secret seem even more mysterious. Finally, the cry of a new baby would announce a successful delivery!
The Chamberlen families lived in London. As they became successful and wealthy, they bought more property. Peter the Younger died at one of these family homes in Downe, Kent.
Peter Chamberlen the Third
Peter Chamberlen the Third was born in 1601. He was the oldest son of Peter the Younger. He also became a well-known physician, continuing his family's medical legacy. He lived until 1683.
