John Peter Gilmore (born August 25, 1931 – died February 3, 2013), known as Peter Gilmore, was an English actor. He was most famous for playing Captain James Onedin in the TV show The Onedin Line. This show was about ships and sailing in the past. He appeared in 91 episodes of the series, which ran from 1971 to 1980.

Early Life and Education

Peter Gilmore was born in Leipzig, Germany. He grew up in a place called Nunthorpe in England. He left school when he was 14 years old. Peter always dreamed of becoming an actor. In 1952, he briefly attended a special acting school called Parada. This school was part of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. However, he was expelled after a short time.

Acting Career Highlights

Peter Gilmore acted in many different films and TV shows. He was in 11 of the popular Carry On comedy movies. He also appeared in other British films. These included The Great St Trinian's Train Robbery (1966) and Oh! What a Lovely War (1969). He was also in The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) and Warlords of Atlantis (1978).

Early in his career, Peter performed in several stage musicals. He even released a song called "Follow That Girl" in 1960. His most famous role was Captain James Onedin. After playing this character for a long time, Peter felt that people only saw him as the tough sea captain.

Later, he appeared in an episode of Doctor Who called Frontios (1984). In this episode, he played a character named Brazen. Peter Gilmore also had a role in an episode of the TV show Heartbeat. His third wife, actress Anne Stallybrass, was a regular actress on Heartbeat.

Peter Gilmore was married three times during his life. His first wife was actress Una Stubbs. They were married from 1958 to 1969. They adopted a child together. His second wife was Jan Waters. They were married from 1970 to 1976. His third wife was actress Anne Stallybrass. She had also worked with him on The Onedin Line. They married in 1987 and stayed together until his death.

Later Years and Passing

Peter Gilmore passed away in London on February 3, 2013. He was 81 years old. He was survived by his third wife, Anne Stallybrass. He also had a son named Jason, who he adopted during his first marriage.
