Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Peter Grant was a Scottish Roman Catholic priest who lived a long time ago, in the 1700s. He was born in Scotland and later became a very important person in Rome, Italy. He helped many British visitors who traveled to Rome.

Early Life and Becoming a Priest

Peter Grant was born in a part of Scotland called Moray. He was part of the Grant family from Blairfind in Glenlivat. When he was young, in 1726, he went to study at the Scotch College at Rome. This was a special school in Rome for Scottish students who wanted to become priests.

After finishing his studies, Peter Grant returned to Scotland in 1735 as a priest. He worked in a church area called Glengarry. He stayed there for about two years.

Working in Rome

In 1737, Peter Grant was asked to take on a new and important job in Rome. He became the "Roman agent." This meant he was a representative for Scottish Catholic affairs in Rome.

In this role, Peter Grant met many British travelers who visited Rome. He was very helpful to them. For many years, important people from Britain often had special letters that introduced them to Abbé Grant when they arrived in Rome. He would help them with their visits and make sure they had a good experience.

A Special Connection

Peter Grant was well-liked by many, including Clement XIV, who was the Pope at that time. The Pope was very fond of Peter Grant and even thought about making him a Cardinal. A Cardinal is a very high-ranking official in the Catholic Church, just below the Pope. However, Pope Clement XIV passed away before he could make Peter Grant a Cardinal.

Peter Grant continued his important work in Rome until he died on September 1, 1784.
