The Peter Kremer House is a special old house in Minnesota Lake, Minnesota. It's now a historic house museum and a library! The Minnesota Lake Historical Society takes care of this important building.

This beautiful house was built in 1902. It was once the home of Peter Kremer, who came from France, and his wife, Millie Zabel, from Prussia. They were both very important leaders in their community.

History of the Kremer Family

The Peter Kremer House was originally owned by Peter Kremer and his wife, Millie. Peter Kremer was born in France. He moved to the Minnesota Lake area in 1865. His family were some of the very first people to settle in the town. His brothers, Nicholas J., John, and John P., had arrived even earlier, in 1956.

Peter Kremer's Contributions

Peter Kremer helped start many local businesses. These included a flour mill, places for livestock, a creamery, and the Security State Bank. He was also the mayor of Minnesota Lake for 30 years! He also worked as the town marshal and the school treasurer.

Millie Zabel Kremer's Life

Millie Zabel Kremer was born in what was then Prussian Germany. She married Peter Kremer in 1893. Before her marriage, she worked in the mercantile business in Minnesota Lake. After Peter passed away in December 1913, Millie managed their many properties and Peter's business interests.

Inside the Kremer House

The Peter Kremer House is built in the Queen Anne style. Inside, you can see an open staircase and windows with curved and stained glass. There is also a cozy fireplace and large pocket doors that slide into the walls. The wooden floors throughout the house are still the original ones!

Rooms and Exhibits

The main floor of the house shows off chinaware that the Kremers used. Upstairs, you'll find the master bedroom and other rooms for guests. There were also rooms for the family's maid and housekeeper. A steep stairway at the back of the house was used by the hired help.

Kremer House Library and Museum

Today, the first floor of the Kremer House is home to the Minnesota Lake Library. It is open for everyone to visit and use. The upstairs area works as a history center. It has many resources about local families and the history of the town.

Museum Exhibits

The museum often changes its exhibits. These exhibits show different items related to the history of Minnesota Lake. There are also some things that are always on display. One is a small, one-tenth scale model of a windmill. It was built by Donald Kain, who was Godfried Schostag's great-grandson. Another permanent exhibit is a special quilt made in 1966. It celebrates 100 years since the town was renamed Minnesota Lake.
