Peter Larsson Rypdal (born February 10, 1909 – died January 9, 1988) was a talented Norwegian musician. He was known as a fiddler, which means he played the Hardingfele or violin. He also wrote many famous traditional folk music songs.

Peter was born and passed away in Tresfjord, Norway. This town is in the Møre og Romsdal region.

Peter L. Rypdal: A Musical Life

Peter Rypdal wrote many musical pieces. Two of his special wedding marches are still very popular in Norway today. Besides folk music, he loved classical music too. He shared this interest with his friend, Henry Vike. Peter even wrote a wedding march called "A Summer Wedding" for Henry.

Creating Music Groups

Peter was very active in his local music scene. He helped start a Symphony Orchestra in Tresfjord and Vestnes. This orchestra played music from 1949 to 1964. Before that, he had his own string quartet for many years. This group was very popular and performed at many events. Peter also helped create "Romsdal spelemannslag" in 1936. This was another important music group.

Inspired by a Master

Peter Rypdal was inspired by another famous violinist, Sigbjørn Bernhoft Osa. Peter met Osa several times when Osa visited the area for concerts. Osa also learned some tunes from Peter. Many of Peter's songs were even played in Osa's concerts.

Family of Musicians

Peter Rypdal's love for music continued through his family. Some of his grandchildren are also musicians. These include Jorun Marie Kvernberg and Ola Kvernberg, who are both talented artists.
