Sir Peter Manwood (1571–1625) was an English politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a part of today's Parliament. He served there at different times between 1589 and 1621.

Peter Manwood was the oldest son of Sir Roger Manwood. His mother was Dorothy Theobald. Peter was born in 1571.

In 1583, when he was about 12 years old, Peter started studying at a famous law school called Inner Temple in London. Even though he studied law, he never became a full lawyer.

Early Political Life

In 1589, Peter Manwood was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for the town of Sandwich. An MP is a person elected to represent their area in the House of Commons.

By 1591, he helped manage the port of Dover. When his father passed away in 1592, Peter took over the family's lands and wealth.

From 1593 to 1620, he worked as a justice of the peace in Kent. This meant he helped keep law and order in the local area.

Peter Manwood was re-elected as an MP for Sandwich in 1593 and again in 1597. He also helped manage food supplies and organize local soldiers.

In 1598, he traveled to other countries to learn more. He was very interested in history and old things. He even joined a group called the Antiquarian Society.

He was elected MP for Sandwich again in 1601. He also became a Deputy Lieutenant for Kent, helping the main county leader. From 1602 to 1603, he was the High Sheriff of Kent, a very important local official.

Later Years and Challenges

In 1603, Peter Manwood was given the title of "Sir" and became a knight. He continued his political career, becoming an MP for Saltash in 1604.

Later, he represented his home county of Kent in Parliament in 1614. His last time as an MP was in 1621 for Romney.

Towards the end of his life, Peter Manwood faced financial difficulties. He had to go abroad because he owed a lot of money. However, he made agreements with the people he owed money to and returned to England by 1623.

Sir Peter Manwood passed away in 1625.

Manwood's Family Life

In January 1588, Peter Manwood married Frances Hart. Her father was Sir George Hart.

Peter and Frances had a large family with at least seven sons and four daughters. One of their sons, John, later helped the family regain its wealth. One of their daughters, Elizabeth, married a man named Thomas Walsingham.
