Peter Marshall Murray was born on June 9, 1888, in Houma, Louisiana. His parents were John L. Murray and Louvinia Smith. From a young age, he showed a strong interest in learning.
He attended Dillard University and finished his studies there in 1910. After that, he went on to medical school. In 1914, he earned his degree as a Medical Doctor (M.D.) from Howard University.
Becoming a Doctor
After medical school, Dr. Murray completed his internship at Freedmen's Hospital. An internship is like a training period where new doctors work in a hospital. He then became a teacher at Howard University, helping to train future doctors. He also served on the university's Board of Trustees, which helps guide the school.
Family Life and Moving to New York
On July 2, 1917, Peter Murray married Charlotte Wallace in Washington, D.C. In 1920, they lived in the Truxton Circle area. Charlotte and her sister were both teachers.
In July 1921, the Murrays welcomed their son, John, into the world. Later that same year, the family moved to Harlem, a vibrant neighborhood in New York City.
A Doctor in New York
In New York City, Dr. Murray continued his medical career. He became an attending physician at Sydenham Hospital. An attending physician is a doctor who has completed all their training and is responsible for patient care.
