Sir Peter Mews (born August 29, 1672 – died March 19, 1726) was an important English politician. He lived at Hinton Admiral. He served in the British Parliament, which is like a country's main law-making group, from 1710 until he passed away in 1726.

Peter Mews' Early Life

Peter Mews was the son of Colonel John Mews and Sarah Mellish. He studied at St John's College and All Souls College in Oxford. His father, Colonel John Mews, supported Oliver Cromwell. Cromwell was a famous leader during a time of big changes in England. However, Peter Mews and his uncle, Bishop Peter Mews, were strong supporters of the King. They were known as royalists.

Important Roles and Land

In 1698, Peter Mews' uncle, Bishop Peter Mews, gave him an important job. He became the Chancellor of Winchester Diocese. This was a key role in the church's administration. He held this job until he died in 1726.

Peter Mews also bought a lot of land. In 1708, he purchased the areas of Christchurch and Westover. Before that, he had already bought the land of Hinton Admiral. He built a large house there in 1720. This house is called Hinton Admiral House.

Serving in Parliament

Peter Mews became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Christchurch. He was first elected in 1710. An MP is someone chosen by people to represent them in Parliament. Parliament makes laws for the country. He was re-elected several times. He won elections in 1713, 1715, and 1722. On July 13, 1712, he was given the special title of Knight. This meant he was called "Sir Peter Mews."

Family and Legacy

Sir Peter Mews passed away on March 19, 1726. In 1719, he married Lydia Gervis at Westminster Abbey. Lydia was the daughter of George Gervis. Sir Peter and Lydia did not have any children. Because of this, his estates were later inherited by the descendants of Lydia's sisters. Hinton Admiral House went to his nephew, George Ivison Tapps. His family still lives in the house today.
