Peter Sturholdt: Olympic Boxer

Peter Sturholdt was a talented boxer from Minnesota. He competed in the 1904 Summer Olympics, which took place in St. Louis, Missouri. The Olympics are a huge international sports event. Athletes from all over the world compete in many different sports.

Early Life and Olympic Dream

In 1904, Peter Sturholdt competed in the lightweight boxing class. This means he was in a weight group for boxers who were not too heavy. He fought hard in the Olympic boxing tournament. He finished fourth after losing a fight for the bronze medal. The bronze medal fight was against another boxer named Russell van Horn.

A Surprising Olympic Medal

Something interesting happened after the 1904 Olympics. In November 1905, another boxer, Jack Egan, was disqualified. He had finished second in the same boxing event. This meant he had to give back his Olympic medals and other prizes.

Even though Olympic records did not officially change at the time, some researchers looked into this later. In 2008, a researcher named Taavi Kalju noticed the change. Because Jack Egan was disqualified, Peter Sturholdt was then listed as the bronze medalist by Sports Reference. This was a special recognition for his performance.

Life After the Olympics

After his time as an Olympic boxer, Peter Sturholdt lived in St. Louis, Missouri. He worked there as a painter and also as a cabinet maker. These jobs involve working with wood and making things look good.

Family and Legacy

Sadly, Peter Sturholdt died in 1919. He was working as a painter when he had an accident. The scaffolding he was on broke, and he fell. He left behind his wife, Margaret M. Terney. They had five children together: Adele, Margaret (who was called Marge), Orvin John, Peter J., and Davis.
