Peter of Aragon, Count of Alburquerque facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Peter, Infante of Aragón (born 1406 – died 1438 in Naples, Italy), was an important prince. He was the Viceroy of Sicily from 1424 to 1425 and also the Duke of Noto. Peter was the sixth child of King Ferdinand I of Aragón and Countess Eleanor of Alburquerque.

Early Life and Family

Peter was born in 1406. His parents were King Ferdinand I of Aragón and Countess Eleanor of Alburquerque. He had several brothers and sisters. His older brother, Alfonso, later became a powerful king.

The Infantes of Aragon

Peter and his brothers, John (who would become a king) and Henry, were known as the Infantes of Aragon. They were a group of princes who often caused problems. They frequently fought and invaded lands belonging to their cousin and brother-in-law, King Juan II of Castile. They caused trouble for the people of Castile and were often against Álvaro de Luna, a powerful figure in Castile.

Contact with Ethiopia

Peter was part of an interesting historical event. In 1428, a ruler from Ethiopia named Yeshaq sent a letter to Peter's brother, King Alfonso V of Aragon. This letter proposed an alliance against the Muslims. It also suggested a double marriage. As part of this plan, Infante Peter would bring a group of skilled workers to Ethiopia. There, he would marry Yeshaq's daughter. It is not clear if King Alfonso replied to this letter. However, in 1450, Alfonso wrote to Yeshaq's successor, Zara Yaqob. Alfonso said he would send artisans if their safety could be guaranteed. This was because a previous group of thirteen of his people traveling to Ethiopia had died.

Adventures in Italy

Later, Peter's eldest brother, King Alfonso V of Aragón, decided to move to Italy. He wanted to conquer the Kingdom of Naples and live there. Around 1432, Peter and his brothers joined Alfonso. They were eager for adventures in Naples. They took part in battles, including the difficult naval battle of Ponza. They also helped conquer the city of Gaeta.

Death in Battle

Sadly, Peter died in battle in Italy. He was attacking Naples when he was killed. Peter was 32 years old at the time of his death in 1438. His brother Henry also died in battle in Spain.
