Peyton's Past: A River Port
Peyton was once a busy port town. It was located right on the Mississippi River. Boats would stop there to load and unload goods. Today, you won't find any signs of the old town. The area is now covered by farms and forests. Part of it is also covered by the Mississippi Levee. A levee is a wall built to prevent a river from flooding.
The Rising Sun Baptist Church
Even though the town is gone, one building still stands. This is the Rising Sun Baptist Church. Some people who used to live in Peyton, or their family members, still go to this church. They even have a special "Coming Home" service every year. This event brings people back to remember the old town.
A Temporary County Seat
In 1843, a big flood damaged a nearby town called Commerce. Commerce was the county seat at the time. A county seat is the main town where the government offices are. Because of the flood, the county seat was moved to Peyton for a short time. However, after six months, it was moved back to Commerce.
