What is a Phase-Locked Loop?

A phase-locked loop is an electronic circuit that makes sure one signal follows another very closely. It's like a smart system that keeps two things dancing to the same beat. If one signal speeds up or slows down, the PLL adjusts the other signal to match it.

How PLLs Keep Signals in Sync

The main job of a PLL is to keep an output signal's timing (its "phase") exactly matched with an input signal. Think of it like a car's cruise control. If the car starts to go too fast or too slow, the cruise control adjusts the engine to keep the speed steady. A PLL does this for electronic signals.

When the PLL's output signal is perfectly aligned with the input, we say it is "locked." If it starts to lose this lock, the circuit quickly makes small changes to bring it back into alignment. This constant adjustment is why it's called a "loop."
