About Phil Joel
Early Life and Music Beginnings
Phil Joel was born in Auckland, New Zealand. He started his music journey as the lead singer and guitarist for a band called Drinkwater. They released a short album (EP) in 1991 and a full album called Three Murky Vibes in 1993.
Joining the Newsboys
In 1994, the famous band Newsboys noticed Phil while Drinkwater was opening for them in Auckland. Phil moved to the United States on August 13, 1994, to join the Newsboys as their bass player. He started using his middle name, Joel, to make it easier for people to say.
Solo Music and Other Projects
Phil Joel released his first solo album, Watching Over You, in June 2000. He went on a tour called Strangely Normal Tour to support it, performing with other bands like LaRue and Luna Halo.
His second solo album, Bring It On, came out in November 2002. In 2005, he released The deliberatePeople. Album. This album was part of a new Christian ministry Phil and his wife, Heather, started called deliberatePeople. People liked this album because it had a simple rock sound.
Phil's wife, Heather, used to host TV shows on CMT. They met at a radio station in her home state of Kansas. They got married in 1996 and have two children.
In December 2006, Phil decided to leave the Newsboys. He wanted to spend more time with his family. In September 2008, he released his fifth solo album, The New Normal.
Zealand Worship and Recent Work
In 2015, Phil started a new music project called Zealand Worship.
In December 2017, it was announced that Phil would join his old bandmates for the Newsboys United tour. This tour brought together different members from the band's history.
Phil Joel also wrote a book called Redwoods & Whales, which was released in April 2019.
During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Phil took part in a special online performance. He joined over 200 New Zealanders in a virtual choir to sing "The Blessing". People recorded themselves singing, and then all the videos were put together.
In January 2021, Phil went back to his solo music. He released an album called Better Than I Found It. He recorded it in his home studio while he was in lockdown.
