Phil Joel's Music Journey
Phil was born in Auckland, New Zealand. Before joining Newsboys, he was the lead singer and guitarist for a band called Drinkwater. They released a short album (EP) in 1991 and a full album in 1993.
Joining the Newsboys
The Newsboys band noticed Phil when Drinkwater opened for them in Auckland in 1994. Phil then moved to the United States to become the Newsboys' bass player on August 13, 1994. He started using his middle name, Joel, to make it easier for people to say.
Solo Music and New Projects
In June 2000, Phil Joel released his first solo album called Watching Over You. He went on a tour to support this album, performing with other bands like LaRue and Luna Halo.
His second solo album, Bring It On, came out in November 2002. His third album, The deliberatePeople. Album, was released in 2005. This album was connected to a Christian group Phil and his wife, Heather, had started.
Phil's wife, Heather, used to host TV shows on CMT. They met in her home state of Kansas and got married in 1996. They have two children together.
In December 2006, Phil decided to leave the Newsboys. He wanted to spend more time with his family. In 2008, he released his fifth solo album, The New Normal.
Zealand Worship and Return to Newsboys
In 2015, Phil started a new music project called Zealand Worship. Later, in December 2017, it was announced that Phil would rejoin his old bandmates for the Newsboys United tour.
Phil also wrote a book called Redwoods & Whales, which was released in April 2019.
In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, Phil took part in a special online music video. It was called "The Blessing - Aotearoa/New Zealand" and featured over 200 New Zealanders singing "The Blessing" together from their homes.
In January 2021, Phil went back to his solo music career. He released an album called Better Than I Found It, which he recorded in his home studio.
