About the Buru Friarbird's Name

A German scientist named Johann Friedrich Gmelin first officially described the Buru friarbird. He did this in 1788. He wrote about it in a famous book. The book was called Systema Naturae.

At first, Gmelin thought it was like a bee-eater bird. He gave it the scientific name Merops moluccensis. Later, in 1816, a French scientist named Louis Pierre Vieillot created a new group for these birds. This group was called Philemon. Now, the Buru friarbird is one of 18 honeyeaters in this group. Its full scientific name is Philemon moluccensis.

The Buru friarbird is very similar to the Seram friarbird. The Seram friarbird's scientific name is Philemon subcorniculatus.
