Philip O'Sullivan Beare (born around 1590, died 1660) was an important Irish soldier and writer. He came from a powerful Irish family called the Gaelic nobility. He became famous for writing a book called The Catholic History of Ireland. This book told the story of Ireland from the point of view of the native Irish Catholic people.

Philip had to leave Ireland and go to Spain during a time called Tyrone's Rebellion. This was when Irish clans and leaders were fighting their last big battles against England.

Biography

Philip O'Sullivan Beare was born in a place called Dursey in Ireland. His father was Dermot O'Sullivan, and his uncle was Donal O'Sullivan Beare, who was a prince or leader of the Beare region. The O'Sullivan family, led by the O'Sullivan Beare, owned a lot of land, including much of Valentia Island in southwestern Ireland.

In 1602, when he was about 12 years old, Philip was sent to Spain. He went to school in Compostela, where he was taught by a Spanish teacher named Vendamma and an Irish Jesuit priest named John Synnott.

After his education, Philip joined the Spanish army and served as a military officer.

In 1621, he published his most famous book, The Catholic History of Ireland. This book is very important for understanding the wars in Ireland during his lifetime. While some parts might not be perfectly accurate by today's standards, it gives a valuable look at history from an Irish perspective. He also wrote other books, including a Life of St. Patrick and replies to other writers who disagreed with his views.

Philip O'Sullivan Beare died in Spain in 1660. He left behind a daughter who was 12 years old.
