The English Civil War was a big conflict in England during the 1640s. It was fought between those who supported King Charles I (the Royalists, also called Cavaliers) and those who supported Parliament (the Parliamentarians, also called Roundheads).

The Battle of Shelford Manor

Shelford Manor was an important place for the Royalists. It helped protect a key Royalist stronghold called Newark on Trent. On November 3, 1645, Parliamentarian forces attacked Shelford Manor. These forces were led by two important commanders, Colonel John Hutchinson and Sydenham Poyntz.

The fighting was very fierce. The war had become increasingly harsh, and battles were often very brutal. About 160 Royalist soldiers were defending Shelford Manor. Many of them were killed when the Parliamentarian forces stormed the house. Colonel Philip Stanhope was among those who died during this battle.
